How do young people usually get advice about what to take? Are parents better career advisers than guidance counselors?
There are a lot of ways for young people to get advice on what career to take. One way is through their parents, they can ask questions on why their parents chose that job and not another course. This gives them insights on what to pick and for what reasons. Also, the parents would often say what is the course that is in demand and say which among them pays the highest. Also, the child would actually like to take their parent’s career if they admired their parents ever since they were little. Another way for children to get advice on what course to take is through the school. The school offers many ways to help the students. One way is to take a test and, based from your answers, determine which job or course suits your personality. Then you may discuss the results with the guidance counselor. He is the number one person who can help you to choose which career to take at school.
Seeing that guidance counselors are more professional in terms of giving advice and they can base their answer on the test that you have just done, I think they are better career advisors than parents. Parents tend to manipulate their children in taking a specific course or career. They would usually threaten their child to take this course or not go to a University at all which does not help the child in solving his problem. Also, parents can be biased towards their own career as well. They would make their career sound interesting compared to other careers that the child wants to take whereas the guidance counselor is honest about each and every career that is out there.
In summary, choosing a course can be quite difficult nowadays and the child needs advice and support on which career he/she should take. Talking to your parents may help but talking to your school’s guidance counselor will help you more since they are more professional and they can’t threaten you on which course to take.
